What is an endodontist?
An endodontist is a dentist who has completed an additional two or more years of accredited specialty training after having graduated from dental school. An endodontist has a practice limited to the diagnosis and treatment of endodontic problems.

What is endodontic (root canal) treatment?
Endodontic treatment is the removal and cleansing of the diseased dental pulp (the soft tissue which is inside your tooth). The procedure is completed by filling and sealing the resulting space.

Why might I need endodontic treatment?
There are many reasons why endodontic treatment might be needed including the following:
~ large fillings, crowns, extensive decay, cracks, fractures and trauma to the tooth.
~ Endodontic treatment is needed when the pulp tissue (the main nerves and blood    supply inside the tooth) becomes irreversibly inflamed or infected.

How do I know if I need endodontic treatment?
Some symptoms which may indicate the need for endodontic treatment include:
~ Discomfort when touching or biting, cold or hot sensitivity which lingers,
   discoloration of the tooth, swelling and spontaneous pain. However, sometimes    there are no symptoms which is why regular dental exams are so important.

How can endodontic treatment help me?
Endodontic treatment allows you to keep and maintain your natural tooth. The only other option is removal or extraction of the diseased tooth.

What are the reasons to see an endodontist?
Your dentist may have referred you to our office because of a concern regarding your medical conditions, treatment options, diagnosis, pain management and the overall high quality of your dental care. As a result of our specialty training and experience, we perform routine as well as difficult and very complex procedures, including endodontic retreatment and surgery.

What should I expect during and after endodontic treatment?
We understand most patients are apprehensive and we will do everything possible to maximize your comfort during the procedure. Most endodontic procedures can be completed in one or two appointments with a success rate averaging around 90%. It is important to remember that your tooth is not dead nor will our treatment cause it to die. All the surrounding structures, which have a rich nerve and blood supply, remain alive and are sensitive to the treatment performed. Therefore, it is not unusual to experience some sensitivity and soreness following any of your visits, however, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your treatment, please contact our office. After endodontic treatment, your tooth is then restored by your general dentist and can function just like any other tooth for the rest of your life, ensuring comfortable chewing and a natural appearance.
